#Churchill's Sinews of Peace (Iron Curtain) speech is, in some ways, a response to Stalin's 1946 'election' speech, given #otd at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow: Emphasizing that conflict is the "inevitable result" of world (Western-driven) capitalism, Stalin identifies the capitalist system as the underlying cause of WWI and II and implies future conflicts. He cites Russia's role in the Allied victory and her dramatic industrialization between the wars as testament that the S...oviet social and state systems were not only viable but superior far from a "dangerous experiment" or "house of cards," as the foreign press had originally criticized. In closing, Stalin rallies his audience with calls for continued exponential growth of industrial production and extensive scientific research, potentially hinting at developing atomic weapons. In a sense, Stalin's speech is the first unofficial declaration of the Cold War. #sinewsofpeace75 Read the full, translated speech: http://soviethistory.msu.edu//cold/stalin-election-speech/ "Comrade J V Stalin delivers a speech at a pre-election meeting of voters of the Stalin constituency in Moscow on February 9, 1946 at the Bolshoi Theater," Pravda issue 66 (12634), 7 Mar 1953 (Wikimedia Commons)

#otd 1946 "Churchill was fêted on his last day in the city with a lunch at the Havana Yacht Club. Unfortunately, it appears that the regular fixture there, Ernest Hemingway, was away at the time. The same day, the Ministry of Health Building, which Churchill had admired, received him and he was left alone to paint its magnificent colonial, colonnaded patio." The Churchill party then flew back to the States, landing in Miami at 6 pm. #sinewsofpeace75 Read more about #Churchil...l's 1895 and 1946 Cuba visits in this article by Hal Klepak from The International Churchill Society: https://winstonchurchill.org//grau-san-martin-visit-to-cu/ 1. Painting was a favorite pastime of #Churchill, who, in January 1946, spent much of his first week in the Sunshine State putting oils to canvas. #otd 1946 R. Henry Norweb, US Ambassador to Cuba, wrote to President Harry Truman detailing the previous night's dinner conversation with #Churchill. #OTD 1946 #Churchill returned from his brief stay in Varadero and was the dinner guest of US Ambassador R. Henry Norweb and his wife Emery at the embassy residence in Havana. Built just ~5 years before, the grand neo-clasical residence was designed by Paul Franz Jaquet, Leland W. King Jr., and Frederick Larkin. The mansion served as the embassy residence until the US severed diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1961; President Obama also stayed here during his 2016 visit, part of an effort to normalize relations between the two countries. #sinewsofpeace75 1. #otd 1946 Although adept at radio broadcasts, #Churchill replied to Westminster College MO President McCluer's hopeful inquiry about televising the upcoming Iron Curtain speech with "I deprecate complicating the occasion with technical experiments." #OTD 1946 Although less than 10,000 US homes had TV sets, Westminster College MO President McCluer saw the potential of this new technology to share the message Churchill would soon deliver in Fulton. On Jan 15 he sent this telegram to Churchill to pitch the idea. Stay tuned for Churchill's response, and ANCM's use of "new technology" to deliver our #sinewsofpeace75 program Mar 5-6, 2021.... When asked during the press conference about the socialist program of the Labour Government which won 1945 election, ending Winston Churchill's first run as prime minister he replied, "I never criticize the government of my country when I'm abroad and I rarely leave off crit...icizing them when I'm at home. 2005.02 by Yale Joel, Richard and Barbara Mahoney Collection #sinewsofpeace75

#OTD 1977 Clementine Spencer-Churchill died 43 years ago today. We remember her wisdom, refinement, and devotion to so many causes and people, chiefly her husband, Winston, who famously expressed, My ability to persuade my wife to marry me was quite my most brilliant achievement... Of course, it would have been impossible for any ordinary man to have got through what I had to go through in peace and war without the devoted aid of what we call, in England, one’s better half. The Museum’s Reading Room and library is named in her honor.

Today marks the 95th anniversary of Margaret Thatcher’s birth. Today we remember Lady Thatcher, who followed Winston Churchill to Westminster College in 1996. The long twilight struggle of the Cold War ended five years ago with complete victory for the West and for the subject peoples of the Communist empire and I very much include the Russian people in that description. It ended amid high hopes of a new world order. But those hopes have been grievously disappointed. Bosni...a, Somalia, and the rise of Islamic militancy all point to instability and conflict rather than cooperation and harmony. The international bodies in which our hopes were reposed anew after 1989 and 1991 have given us neither prosperity nor security and there is a pervasive anxiety about the drift of events. It remains to be seen whether this generation will respond to these threats with the imagination and courage of Sir Winston, President Truman, and the wise men of those years. -Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher New Threats for Old Speech (John Findley Green Foundation Lecture, Westminster College on March 9, 1996) See more

I've sang this song countless times but this time... this time was different. I heard the purpose in the choice of syntax. I heard the pain and hope all in one ...breath. I heard the ancestors calling for recollection, remembrance, reverance , restoration, and rest. These are not just words. A command is here. We all need to step up to the plate and follow it. #LiftEVERYVoice2020

75 Years Ago: Westminster College President Franc McCluer wrote this letter to Winston Churchill inviting the statesman to deliver the college’s John Findley Green Foundation Lecture in Fulton and St. Louis, Missouri. President Harry Truman wrote a longhand note at the bottom of the letter: This is a wonderful school in my home state. Hope you can do it. I’ll introduce you. Best regards, Harry Truman Churchill would accept and, five months later, would travel to Fulton to deliver his Sinews of Peace address, commonly known as the Iron Curtain speech. #SinewsofPeace75
