THIS DAY IN MISSOURI HISTORY: February 23, 1803 Birthday of John A. Sutter. Sutter lived and farmed in the Westport-Independence area and later moved to C...alifornia where he operated Sutter’s Mill. His mill is where gold was discovered and had a huge effect on St. Louis, Westport, Independence, and St. Joseph. February 23, 1826 The city of St, Louis passed an ordinance providing for a police force of 27 men. It took twenty years to actually organize the force. February 23, 1834 This is the birthday of Johann Georg Aff (Pictured) who moved from Germany, settled in rural St. Louis County and farmed his land. A town grew up near his place and people called it Aff Town. Today we say Affton. February 23, 1843 The Name of the County of Kinderhook was changed to Camden. February 23, 1853 Westminster College chartered in Fulton. February 23, 1892 Birthday of Pineville, Missouri’s great folklorist, Vance Randolph. (Pictured) February 23, 1911 Fayette’s High School burned. February 23, 1912 The toll road at Rocheport was sold to the state for $3,200. February 23, 1923 The air pollution was so bad in St. Louis that the Missouri Botanical Garden made plans to move out of town. They bought a large tract of land in Gray Summit, Missouri for that purpose. It came to be known as the Shaw Arboretum and now, as the Shaw Nature Reserve. February 23, 1945 Lieutenant Harold George Schrier (Pictured) led a group of US Marines up Mount Suribachi and, on this date, planted a flag at her top (Pictured) signaling the great victory at Iwo Jima. Schrier was born at Corder, MO and went to school at Lexington, MO. February 23, 1950 A large crowd assembled in the gym at Gainesville High School for a concert by the radio artists, The Carter Sisters. February 23, 1950 At the Nottinghill School, (Ozark County) they had a big pie supper. A box of candy was given to The Prettiest Girl who happened to be the teacher. One young couple was awarded a jar of pickles for being The Most Lovesick Couple. One man won a bar of soap as Man With the Dirtiest Feet and another earned a loaf of bread for being the Biggest Loafer. February 23, 1966 Dennis Droege finished his high school basketball career with the Concordia Orioles by scoring 80 points in two games at the regional tournament. February 23, 1983 The EPA announced the buyout of Times Beach, Missouri which Russell Bliss had sprayed with dioxin-laced waste oil. Bumper stickers of the day read Ignorance is Bliss. Contaminated soil was incinerated and Time Beach is now Route 66 State Park. February 23, 1996 Forensic experts meeting at a national conference confirmed that the remains buried in Kearney, Missouri were truly those of Jesse James. See more
