Had some trees trimmed yesterday - we were lucky to be scheduled for the best day of the week for the job! Shout out to the guys from City View Arbor for their great work trimming limbs away from wires, and showing some love to the other trees on the lots. Trimmed dead wood, cut poison ivy vines, even pruned our peach trees in front. Thanks Dylan and all!

Presentation on the black family, sponsored by the MO Historical Society. Free and available via Zoom. From the website: The Association for the Study of African American Life and History’s theme for 2021 is the Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. To embrace this theme, the Missouri Historical Society’s African American History Initiative is looking at the Black family, fictive kin, and genealogy as a way to celebrate the family as the foundation of African American life. Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr., a Princeton professor and expert on the African American experience, will give our Black History Month presentation on the experiences and development of the Black family. Family is the most important social unit for any civilization. It sets the foundation for every person's life and is a significant determining factor of future ...wellbeing. Join in on the Sankofa Lunch Hour as we discuss the topic of Broken Family Bonds- The History of the Purposeful Dismantling of the Black Family by the United States of America and the Residual Dysfunction. The purpose of this show is not to degrade or demean Black people in any way. The intent is to name the things happening in our communities that have become normal ways of living because of oppression, but are harmful to our health and prosperity. The only way to deal with the problems are to call them out! We want this show to be informative and interactive, so please engage. What dysfunction do you see within the Black community/culture today that is linked to the breaking of Black families from the 1800s to the modern day slavery of mass incarnation?

Mutual aid is a concept that needs revisiting as our needs increase and gov't assistance dries up. Mutual aid is based on the idea that everyone has needs that should be met and that everyone has something to offer to help meet others’ needs, activates everyone as part of the solution, and thus has potential to get to the scale we need. Can we get an "AMEN"?! We just need to organize it, and get neighbors on board. Who wants to be a part of this? Comment, message us, call, or email. Share this post. We can do this! 816-701-6534 [email protected]

Today was the final session in our Youth and Community in Motion series. Reverend Carmen started us off with a story and review of lessons from our previous sessions. Then Miss Kate took over for a lesson about water run-off, storm drains, and the importance of keeping trash out of the water supply. We continued to brave the cold, and walked down to the Resource Center to do some planting. Thanks to Miss Roberta of www.GreenworksinKC.org, we had several trees and shrubs t...o plant behind the garden. We planted, added compost and mulch, and had a great time. Then back inside for our appreciation and graduation ceremony, followed by lunch and fellowship. Thanks to St. Mary of Egypt Church at 38th and Chestnut for sharing their space with us so we could get out of the cold. Thanks to Community Capital Fund for supporting our work. Thanks to Sarah and Natasha at Heartland Conservation Alliance, Roberta at www.GreenworksinKC.org, and Kate and Mary at KC Water for help with programming with the kids. A great day! See more

Harvested sweet potatoes from the garden - we planted them for the first time this year. Learned a lot about this crop - including that it is hard work getting them out of the ground! But we got a lot of them! They are now curing in a sunny window, sweetening up! Broccoli did well too, and a lot easier to harvest!

Saturday was our third of four Youth and Community in Motion events. Our theme was RELIANCE and we talked about how people rely on one another, flowers rely on bees and bees rely on flowers, and all kinds of things go in to a healthy neighborhood. We had discussion activities, took a walk to see what we could observe in the neighborhood, and shared lunch together. Another great event! Many thanks to the Community Capital Fund, Heartland Conservation Alliance, www.GreenworksKC.org, and our Neighbors Group volunteers!

A very busy day at the Resource Center today! The day started early with the delivery of two dumpsters. We offered voter registration to passers-by. Then mid-morning our second session of Youth and Community in Motion started and we had a great group of kids learning about nature. Everything culminated with lunch and fellowship. A great day! Thanks to the Community Capital Fund, Heartland Conservation Alliance, www.Greenworkskc.org, and our Chestnut Neighbors Group team!
