Children's Center for the Visually Impaired (CCVI) 02.01.2021

We are saddened to hear of the passing of longtime Children's Center for the Visually Impaired volunteer, supporter, and friend, Christopher Paone. A loyal resident of Kansas City, Chris was dedicated to making his community a better place, and he always strived to bring joy to others. The students and parents of the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired were no exception; Chris quickly became a part of the CCVI family. As a participant and volunteer for Trolley Run, Ch...ris brought his iconic smile to thousands of runners and always remembered the students he ran for. Christopher's family notes his kind and giving spirit. His legacy will surely be represented by his love, compassion, and generosity. An avid chef, Chris embodied creativity, dedication, and hard work-- all the qualities of a true CCVI role model. Christopher Paone is survived by his wife, Megan, and their dog, Leroy; his parents, Dr. Douglas Paone and Davina McLaughlin; his brother, Mitchell Paone; and his in-laws, Denny and Carmen Thum.

Braille is a vital tool in the life of someone who is blind or losing their sight. - Braille Works. At CCVI, we use books that have been converted into Braille to help our children develop their reading skills. Due to the size of Braille it tends to take up a lot of space on a page! This is why Braille books are usually much larger than traditional books. Some commonly known books, like ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ make up 10 volumes in Braille! #WorldBrailleDay ... Braille is an essential component of the Expanded Core Curriculum, which are the additional skills blind and visually impaired children need in order to learn. Braille literacy plays the same role for visually impaired students that print literacy plays for sighted students. Recent developments in technology have allowed for many literacy materials to be made available through the use of screen readers and audio components. While these are helpful tools, listening to somethi...ng being read is a much different task than actively reading the materials. Braille allows blind and visually impaired students to develop the essential skills of reading and writing, thus setting the stage for academic achievement, increased independence, and employment. As with many skills, early intervention and direct instruction is vital to ensuring visually impaired students have access to the tools they need in order to reach their highest potential. [Image Description: An orange border around a photo of a little girl learning to read braille with the help of an instructor. Today is World Braille Day. Today, we celebrate the work of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille system we use today. Struggling with his blindness, he discovered an invention called night writing that French soldiers used to transfer secret information. This code consisted of 12 raised dots, but Louis Braille adjusted it to 6 dots and created single characters that could be touched by the fingertip. Louis Braille wrote a book about braille in 1829, which outlined how to use it to read and write. It wasn’t until after his death in 1868 that his invention began to be used widely. #WorldBrailleDay [Image Description: A red border around a black background with a grey head statue of a man looking down. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our friend, Ela Shacklett. Ela was a Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired Kindergarten teacher of 31 years and after her time teaching, became an Advisory Board member and beloved volunteer in our classrooms. Ela was monumental in inspiring her students to reach their full potential and touched the lives of all who came to know her. I met Ela when I started at CCVI in 1992 where she inspired me to become a Teache...r of the Visually Impaired. She was tender and tough at the same time and this incredible tenacity helped the children in her classroom soar to new heights and reach their full potential. I can vividly feel her presence in the hallways of CCVI still pushing us to strive for excellence. Ela never lost her sense of wonder. We will not lose it either. You taught us well Ela. Caleb was diagnosed with bilateral optic nerve coloboma, commonly associated with CHARGE Syndrome. Children with CHARGE often experience hearing loss, balance abnormalities, and difficulty communicating. There is currently no medical or surgical treatment for coloboma. Caleb was just five months old when he began receiving services from CCVI. Like many of our students, Caleb requires a unique set of therapies and support. Our expert-trained teachers and therapists work along...side Caleb to provide individualized services. Staff Profile: Delaney Granger Job Title: Teaching Assistant Years at CCVI: 4 Years * What does your job involve?... I work on a team that includes teachers, therapists, parents, and students. Teaching assistants work directly with the students and provide support to the lead teacher, which includes things like assisting students in completing activities, preparing activities, helping to clean and maintain an organized classroom, and supervising during free play times and recess. We also work to implement skills in the classroom that are being practiced during therapy sessions. For example, a physical therapist may ask us to be sure a student is practicing a tall kneel to assist in strength building. The skills that we implement vary due to them being extremely individualized to the students in our classroom. * Describe a typical workday for you? A typical workday for me involves a lot of fun! We get to participate in activities with the students, including crafts, cooking, playing at recess, reading, free play, and walks. Sometimes we are alongside the students, other times we allow them to initiate play independently. These situations are also very individualized! A typical workday also includes a lot of communication about a child’s day, which may be with the lead teacher or with a parent. * What do you like most about your work? There are so many aspects that I enjoy about my work! The children bring so much joy to the classrooms. It is so much fun to spend time with them over the course of the school year and have the opportunity to get to know them. During that time, we develop relationships with the students and their families, working to continue collaborating with them as a team, working to provide the best individualized learning experience that we can! * How do you spend your time away from work? When I’m not at work, I love spending time outside, listening to music, and spending time with my friends and family I love playing board games or card games when we are all together * Do you have any hobbies or pastimes? Some hobbies I have include photography I love taking pictures of landscapes and capturing their beauty; I also love following Sporting Kansas City and attending games * Is there a fun fact about you? I love plantsa lot. I have about 20 houseplants right now!
