During this time of social distancing and quarantine, it’s good to remember that humans have survived through a lot of difficulties and we will get through this too. For generations to come, people will look back to this time to study what people did to survive and even thrive. Consider keeping a hand written journal of this time include daily activities, feelings, and news updates. Also keep an eye on this page for some amazing artifacts from our collection and their histories. Stay safe everyone!

Here are some more articles from the Cass County Democrat Missourian newspaper regarding the 1919 Spanish Influenza pandemic. Because the hard copies of this year of the newspaper are in such fragile condition, these copies are courtesy of the microfilm located in the Cass County Public Library Genealogy Branch. It is interesting that they believed as early as January that they were through the worst of it after a very difficult fall and early winter 1918. Of course we have the benefit of hindsight and it is hard to read some of these articles knowing the terrible wave of illness that is still on its way.

Led by CCHS board director and long time member David Atkinson!
The Harrisonville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to cancel the Log Cabin Festival on October 2 & 3, 2020. It was determi...ned that the Chamber and its volunteers would not be able to adequately manage the protocols outlined by the Cass County Health Department and Center for Disease Control and Prevention required to ensure a safe and fun event. Additionally, as a champion of our community, our schools and businesses we felt that there was too high a risk of transmitting COVID-19 and negatively impacting our citizens and those from surrounding areas. We look forward to continuing this long-standing Harrisonville tradition in future years and to continuing to encourage sustainable economic growth, supporting our members, and partnering with local governments and promoting productive community relationships.
TODAY IN HISTORY: On this date in 1863, Union General Thomas Ewing issued General Order No. 11. Many communities in the Burnt District are still feeling the e...ffect of Order No. 11, to this day. Today we remember the thousands of people and communities in Bates, Cass, Jackson & Vernon Counties affected by the order. See more
Here are some interesting articles I came across while recently researching the Spanish Flu pandemic in Cass County in 1918. Just when you think you have entered the twilight zone with how strange our lives are right now, just remember that 100 years ago people were facing the same challenges we are right now. Stay tuned for more enlightening information on how our grandparents and great grandparents dealt with a pandemic in Cass County.
