Meet Ariel - blood recipient, and blood donation advocate. "On March 30, 2012, as I was dropping my daughter off at school, I walked around to the trunk of my car and all of a sudden, a taxi recklessly ran into me from behind. Instead of another day at the office, I was in an ambulance. Instead of listening to the morning traffic report, I was strapped to a stretcher being transferred to a trauma center. From that point on, as word spread about the accident, everyone offere...d to help in any way imaginable. People have a wonderful desire to want to assist those in need. I was being well taken care of by medical personnel, but what could the rest of us do? The answer soon came to all of us: Give blood. To date, I have had 11 operations and received over 70 units of blood. The human body can only hold about 14 pints. That means that somewhere out there 70 people took the time to sit in a donor’s chair and gave a unit of blood. I’ll never know or be able to thank these 70 people who saved my life. But the least I can do is lend my name to the efforts of those collecting blood donations to replenish and increase our national supply. I want to inspire at least 70 friends, relatives, and members of the broader community to contribute blood. Then I’ll know that I will have paid forward to others who may one day need blood. Not everyone can give for a variety of reasons, medical and other, but the gift of everyone who does give means so much. Those who can’t donate can support, volunteer and recruit. You WILL save a life, just as someone’s blood donation helped save mine."

Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 70% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of mobile drives has dropped by two-thirds this year as these groups can no longer host them. Platelet donation uses automated technology to collect a concentrated volume of platelets, which are necessary for clotting and may be needed by cancer patients, accident victims, and other patients with blood clotting problems. An accident can change your life, but a blood donor could save it. Meet Antoine, a blood recipient, and also, a double red cell donor! He received blood after a car accident in 1997, and felt it was his duty to give back after becoming a recipient!
