November 19th is World Pancreatic Cancer Day and serves as a reminder to pay attention to your body. There is no early detection test for pancreatic cancer which is why it is so important to listen to your body and visit with your primary care provider if you are concerned.

The colonoscopy saved my life. As a health educator working for a cancer program, I know all too well the guidelines for when one should get screened for various cancers. So, it was a no-brainer when I went to see my physician and let him know that I was having vague gastrointestinal issues and reminded him that my mother had colon cancer about 25 years ago. I told him I wanted a colonoscopy, even though it had been only five years since my initial one at age 50the year on...e should get the baseline. Just before my gastroenterologist sedated me, I told him my concerns. When I awoke from the procedure he said I could have one of three types of tumors on my small intestine. Before I knew it, I was getting calls to schedule more diagnostic tests and surgeon visits. Several tests and two surgeon visits later, on February 22, 2011, I was on the operating table. Part of my small intestine and large intestine, my appendix, a one-centimeter carcinoid tumor, and 22 lymph nodes, two of which were cancerous, were removed from my body. I am here today to tell you to talk to your doctor about when you should get screened for colon cancer and which method is best for you. The JECCC urges everyone 50 and over to be screened for colon cancer. Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., but it's preventable with early detection. Risk factors for colon cancer include age, personal history of colorectal polyps, personal history of inflammatory bowel disease, family history of colorectal cancer, certain inherited syndromes, race or ethnic background, or lifestyle factors such as diet, alcohol use, obesity, activity level, or smoking.

Colorectal cancer might not cause symptoms right away, but if it does, it may cause one or more of these symptoms: - A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of the stool, that lasts for more than a few days - A feeling that you need to have a bowel movement that is not relieved by having one - Rectal bleeding with bright red blood... - Blood in the stool, which may make the stool look dark - Cramping or abdominal (belly) pain - Weakness and fatigue - Unintended weight loss See more

Lymphedema signs and symptoms, which occur in your affected arm or leg, include: Swelling of part or all of your arm or leg, including fingers or toes A feeling of heaviness or tightness Restricted range of motion...
