This house at the corner of Russell and Nebraska was built in 1897 by Ernst C. Janssen, a prominent architect in the Compton Heights neighborhood, in the Queen ...Anne style. The original owner was John J. Wuertenbacher, who was a manager for the Fred J. Wolf Co. in 1900. Compton Heights was one of the first subdivision s of its kind, and it was designed by Julius Pitzman in 1889 with curvilinear streets. The area became the neighborhood of choice for many of the German elites in St. Louis, and most of the homes were designed by the famous German architects, including Janssen, who is best known for designing the Magic Chef (Stockstrom) Mansion about a decade after designing this house. In 1906, the house was bought by Joseph A. Lynch, who owned Lynch and Co, a business on St. Charles Street downtown. Lynch lived here with his family for at least another decade, around which time, the neighborhood began to completely fill in. Compton Heights remained intact for the most part in the mid 20th century, even after highway 44 took off its northern edge, and it did not face the level of decline that many of the surrounding neighborhoods did. This was likely due to the deed restrictions in the neighborhood. Compton Heights was listed as a local historic district, and many of the homes have been either restored or well maintained over the years.
