Fireworks sales at licensed seasonal retailers begin today and continue until July 10th. Through June 19th, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety had issued 1,0...99 permits to seasonal fireworks retailers across the Show-Me State. State Fire Marshal Tim Bean reminds Missourians who choose to use consumer fireworks, should follow these safety tips: Confirm fireworks are legal where you live; purchase fireworks only from licensed retailers. Only use fireworks in a large open space that has been cleared of flammable materials. Always keep young children away from fireworks; if teens are permitted to handle fireworks, they should be closely supervised by an adult; always wear eye protection. Make sure to have a garden hose or a bucket of water nearby in case of a fire. Only light fireworks one at a time; never try to re-light fireworks that have malfunctioned Dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water and leaving them in a trash can. Never shoot fireworks off from a glass jar or container. Never use fireworks while consuming alcohol. Never store fireworks from season to season. An additional safety concern for the 2020 fireworks season is loose-fitting cloth face coverings, being worn by many residents as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents need to remember these coverings and use extreme caution when using open-flame devices to light fireworks or when using sparklers. Many of these coverings can easily ignite and cause serious facial burns to the victim.

We wouldn’t want the day to end without saying congratulations and thank you to Fire Chief Charlie Jones for his 50 years of continued service to the CFD and the Caruthersville community. At 18 years old Chief Jones joined the CFD as a firefighter and an engineer. He continued in both of those roles until May 19, 1986 in which time he was appointed the position of Fire Chief. During his time he has lead the CFD and our community through three federal declared disasters, served on many different boards and committees, and been a huge part of the City of Caruthersville and its success. Chief Jones on behalf of the firefighters that serve beneath you we would just like to say thank you for your leadership and your strong desire still to this day to be part of our department and this community.
