Silk Collaged Overalls 2015 When I first started working from others textile waste my dream was to make clothes that would fall apart. It’s not the best business model for a garment maker but it’s what felt right to me. I wanted to make and sell clothing that would fall apart and FORCE the owner mend it. You would have spent enough money that you would be invested In the piece making it more difficult to throw away. ... I would supply gold thread to each piece I sold to give them a jumpstart in the mending process. I was mimicking the ceramic Kintsugi process to textiles and garments. This pair of overalls are my sisters and they did start to crumble. I still need to mend them. #silkcollage

I have begun my first semester teaching Sewn Construction at @kcaifibers & I am truly loving the new atmosphere, colleagues and students. This year there is a campus wide project A FLAG THAT FLIES LARGE ENOUGH created by CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY PRACTICE. Each student is creating a flag that speaks to something they believe and want to flag. My class is participating and I have used this time to create my own flag and the issue of Garment Workers Rights that is very import...ant to me. Teaching this semester has been the most difficult job I have ever had- the students are amazing, resilient and inspiring as always - the ways to get the information to them in a successful manner is the constant stress. That said, this may be the only thing I make this Fall. I am so glad to have the prompt and purpose in these different days and use my sewing practice to say something that means something to me. Thank you @bannerot for the project and direction, @nattyspice for the grommets and constant support as a new instructor and @formationfiber for donating all the linens to create this flag. I used Heat’n Bond and embroidery for the construction and appliqué.

Announcing OBSTACLE COURSE : Homemade Holiday! Very excited to encourage and give people a space & timeline to create a truly homemade gift as we soon enter the Gift giving Season Sign up online Deadine to sign up October 25th Pay what you canDetails below: The events of the past year have called each of us to examine new ways of working, living, sharing and celebrating together. With the season of gift-giving approaching, Hadley Sewing School will be offering a new ite...ration of this summer’s successful Obstacle Course workshopObstacle Course: Homemade Holiday. The first Obstacle Course asked participants to employ a limited selection of materials and processes in the creation of a sewn vessel designed to hold a specific thing of the participant’s choosing (ex. water, a body part, a meal, a sacred object, a plant, etc). For Obstacle Course: Homemade Holiday, participants will create a vessel with the intention of giving it away this holiday seasonperhaps as a bit of fun, perhaps as an olive branch, perhaps as a future heirloom. Additional notes: Obstacle Course is a six-week self-directed sewing workshop designed to inspire and challenge participants’ creativity and innovative problem-solving skills. This challenge is also meant for participants to find new value in items which may be gathering dust in their home; I encourage all participants not to purchase anything new unless it is absolutely necessary. Beginning on November 2nd, Obstacle Course: Homemade Holiday will include a one-time scheduled consultation with Clark as well as a summative virtual show-and-tell discussion on Thursday, December 3rd at 7pm CST

In making this dress I had a little epiphany. I work with what I have so I’m always conserving textiles for this dress style specifically. I used collaged remnants from others dresses for this one. That small gesture made me realize all these dresses are all connected. Anyone who has purchased one or been given one is connected To the one before and after Simple thought but allowed me to see the work outside of the labor. And reinforced my motivations and intentions. Thank you again for your investments #cottoncollage
