I have received alot of questions lately about expansion tanks. What are they? They are a pressure vessel that has a diaphragm that holds air in half the tank. When are they used? If your home has a meter with a integrated check, you have a pressure-reducing valve, or a check valve before the hot water heater. And in some cities it is required by code.... How do they work? In a closed system as water is heated , thermal expansion is created. Thermal expansion is like a tea pot blowing steam. Water in your water heater does not get hot enough to create steam. But water does expand with heat. This provides a place for the extra pressure to go. How do they help? Thermal expansion will not immediately create problems, but over time it will. Dripping faucets, Temperature and Pressure valves going bad , shut of valves no longer working, Toilet repairs are just a few problems that can occur without properly installed expansion tanks.
