We are so proud of our Middle School Student Council, who hosted a Veterans Appreciation Drive-Thru Luncheon to honor our local veterans on Veterans Day, November 11, 2020. The pandemic created the need for us to change our way of honoring those who have served. We are so thankful to all of our veterans! Also, a big thank you to OPAA! and staff for helping to facilitate this event. #BGBobcatPride #VeteransDay Opaa! Food Management, Inc.

Tomorrow, on the 11th hour on the 11th day, of the 11th month, we honor several Americans who have heeded the call to serve others in our community, our state, and our nation and abroad. We celebrate Veterans Day, and honor the more than 25 million Americans, living Americans, who have served in our Armed Forces. As we pause to remember the many sacrifices made by our veterans and their families, we must never forget the high cost of freedom. The dedication of those who serve... or have served in our Armed Forces is an inspiration to all who love our nation and its freedoms. We can never repay our veterans, but we must continue to fight to see that they receive the recognition they deserve. We must also continue to serve others, giving to others a portion of what we have been so graciously given. We are so proud of our Bowling Green R-1 School District Veterans!!! Please make time to thank them for their sacrifice: Craig Smith-USAR, Tiffany Koester-USN, Gene Zbleski-USAR, Dan Grimes-USMC, Bill Holford-USAF, Jack Miller-USMC, Don Farris-USAF Also Mr. Kirkpatrick, Board President-USAR and Dr. Frederickson-retired USAR As a reminder, Bowling Green Middle School is proud to serve 250 free meals for veterans tomorrow from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm. Participants can drive up by the doors of the middle school office and receive their meals while remaining in their cars. Thank you all for helping to remember our veterans and making sure our students learn the importance of service to others before self. #VeteransDay #BGBobcatPride

We are excited to announce the purchase of three school buses this year assisted by federal Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant monies helping to modernize our district bus fleet. These monies have been made available through the EPA and require us to retire an older bus for every purchase. After taking delivery of the three new buses this school year, about half of our route buses are currently under factory warranty. The last two of these three new buses were delivered last week, and we are excited to place these into service! #BGBobcatPride

BGR-1 Family--We have exciting news to share! In 2018, we began the process of applying for upcoming available disaster funds in order to build a tornado safe room at Frankford Elementary. In the summer of 2019, our BOE approved a resolution to help pave the way so we can participate in a 2019 declaration and future declarations. In 2016, Pike County and the District had the opportunity to participate in a Hazard Mitigation program/training. Because no one participated, th...e district was ineligible for applying for federal funds made available through disaster declarations. However, we worked with the Pike County Commission to update the Hazard Mitigation plan to include the BGR-1 School District in September of 2019 and we sent our Notice of Interest (NOI) to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) applying for funds to build a tornado safe room in Frankford. After achieving initial approval for consideration and a year of work satisfying federal requirements, we were notified last Thursday that we had received final approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for funding of the safe room at Frankford. We were told that The Bowling Green R-I School District Safe Room project has been awarded, and award documents will be prepared and sent to us as soon as workloads allow. We look forward to following the process and laying all of the ground work needed in order to build this addition and will communicate progress as information becomes available. A safe room is a hardened structure specifically designed to meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) criteria and provide near-absolute protection in extreme weather events, including tornadoes and hurricanes. For more information regarding this program visit: https://www.fema.gov/emergency-m/risk-management/safe-rooms In other news, we have also learned that the County Commission has approved our application to use federal CARES ACT funds to bring high speed internet to the Frankford Community and Frankford Elementary School. We are excited to be the beneficiaries of these federal dollars to support our community!
