Winter Wise Wednesday Salt isn’t just put down on roads and highways during the winter months, it’s also spread on sidewalks, parking lots and driveways across the city. But our dependence on road salt comes with a heavy environmental price. Madison Water Utility Public Information Officer Amy Barrilleaux will discuss the evidence of road salt infiltration at some Madison drinking water wells. She’ll explain why public engagement around this issue may be the key to saving our drinking water from salt. https://fb.me/e/gxTpXRehC

Winter Wise Wednesday ~ 12-ounce coffee cup full of salt is enough to treat a 20-foot driveway or 10 sidewalk squares. Scatter the salt leaving space between the grains.

Winter Wise Wednesday ~ Five tips for salting smart this winter! Be salt smart. Road salt (sodium chloride) is a chemical most commonly used to remove ice from roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. Just one teaspoon can permanently pollute five gallons of water. Contaminants from road salt enter our creeks by infiltrating groundwater and by surface runoff. As snow and ice melt, they are carried into storm drains and sent untreated to our waterways.
