I just read a story about a landlord confirming a tenant received stimulus money using their SSN to access the IRS site and then using that info for debt collection. That's a no no. Don't do that. (That goes for all manner of debt/bill collection, too).
On Wednesday, I was honored to participate in the first round of video oral arguments ever held by the Missouri Court of Appeals. My makeshift podium/bookcase worked about as well as you'd think, but the back-and-forth with the panel was much less awkward than anticipated (the judge's raised their hands when they had questions, which eliminated cross talk and awkward stops and starts). The Court and its staff are to be applauded for their efforts to accommodate counsel and their clients, but boy do I long to get back into the courtroom!
Terrific vindication for our client last week! This was hardest (by a long shot) fought case I've ever been involved with, and I was only brought in for the last of the five years. Glad to be part of this team led by Jack McInnes and William Skepnek. https://www.billboard.com//thunder-on-the-mountain-brett-m
We scored a big win for our client at the 8th Circuit yesterday. The Court of Appeals reinstated our client's ADA claim for trial! Thanks Kevin Koc and Patrick Reavey (of Reavey Law) for bringing me in on this one - I had a blast writing and arguing it. Great work by all! https://news.bloomberglaw.com//dollar-general-worker-with-
The Mo. Court of Appeals affirmed today the $5.7 mil verdict Tom Pickert and his partner, Ryan Fowler, earned his final client. I hope this small bit of justice brings some solace to Mr Pickert's family and friends. For me, I'm just proud to share the profession with him and Ryan.
The latest from Bonuchi Law. The story writes itself, as illustrated by the KCBJ. https://www.bizjournals.com//family-ownership-dispute-hvac
This morning, SCOTUS struck down a federal statute that prohibited states from allowing sports gambling within their borders. The majority opinion (6-3) written by Justice Alito held, in a nutshell, that the Constitution does not empower Congress to commandeer state legislatures and direct them to pass (or not pass) a particular state law. https://www.washingtonpost.com//31a46d16-2af1-11e8-b0b0-f7
Don't think hiring good appellate counsel is important? Just ask this client, who's arguments for setting aside a $600,000 judgment were dismissed without consideration because of a faulty record.

As a consumer, do yourself a favor and find the arbitration clause in the terms and conditions for whatever it is you are purchasing, licensing, renting, (and so on) and then opt straight out of it if you can. Don't tie your hands for later if something goes astray. https://consumerist.com//why-you-should-opt-out-of-forced/
A wise lawyer once told me that one of the most important lessons I'd learn as I built my practice was when to say no to a potential client. https://www.washingtonpost.com//571f1e46-2c41-11e8-8ad6-fb
Big shout out to our former partners at Polsinelli for a big win for farmers in Mo River flood plain. The ruling means the government must compensate farmers because the Army Corp knowingly made policy decisions that resulted in certain areas flooding at higher rates, which the Court found to be a governmental "taking" of property that requires compensation under the Fifth Amendment. https://www.prnewswire.com//missouri-river-basin-landowner
