Ms. Megan’s advice on how to dress young children for outdoor fun on very cold days. Base layer: Start with a long underwear layer, preferably made of synthe...tics or wool. Cotton tends to absorb moisture and can get uncomfortable. Athletic gear works great as it is close-fitting for layering, retains warmth, and is moisture-wicking. Middle layer: This is the street clothes layer, but remember we are layering so some clothes work better than others. Denim and khaki pants tend to be too bulky and don’t slide well. Sweatpants, joggers, or a second layer of leggings work best. Sweaters and sweatshirts on top are nice and warm. Outer layer: Snow pants and coats! Whether we get snow or not, when the temperature dips below 30 degrees please put the children in snow pants. Even if they decide to take off their coats, the snow pants keep them warm and free to be on the ground no matter how cold it is. Extremities: Now is the time to use the insulated versions of gloves and boots. Thin, single layer gloves or rain boots will not cut it. I find that we remain warm when all skin is covered except the eyes/nose/mouth area, this includes the head and chin! Now is the time to try a balaclava, ski mask, or neck gaiter. And wool socks are always the best. A word about insulation: Many people think of insulated coats and boots as warm-makers. In reality, they are keepers-of-the-same. Cold toes going into boots will remain cold. Wearing multiple pairs of socks can sometimes make the situation worse as it inhibits proper blood flow. My cabin floor is often cold on these frigid winter mornings, and my feet become like icicles. So before I put on my socks and boots I have a hot foot bath (with essential oils), which keeps my feet warm all day and feels super luxurious while I sip my morning tea. Try it! It could become a lovely morning ritual.
