What do Tom Petty, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, et al have in common or the songs Ticket To Ride, Eight Miles High and Hey Mr. Tamobourine Man? They all use real tasty 12-string electric guitar riffs. An unexpected closet classic Kent electric 12-string found its way to our latest "high coolness factor" posting. Circa 1968 Kent, model 821, built in Japan would have been on anybody's list of wants back in the day as a low priced electric for covering so many great tunes. What is you favorite 12-string band or song?
Merry Christmas To All. The Happiest of Holidays to you and the brightest New Year to come! Thank You All. Jeff
We had a fun project in the shop recently. This is a mid-30's Gibson A-00 mandolin that was in a sad state of disrepair with its back coming off and braces loose. Working on old fragile instruments is a bit of a challenge and the end is often a mystery. But, this one turned out great (geez, forgot a finishing pic) with everything secure and tidy once again. This old mandolin had an incredible tone and volume for its pedigree. Proof that age is the master to tone!
A few careful hours later has brought the conclusion of a long postponed project. With our service load getting first priority we rarely get time for the custom build. But, it has always been worthwhile to take what we learn and build something from that reflection. We call this the "Modern-T" as it incorporates features of classic tradition with some flair. This is our "black guard" version and is built from a one-piece swamp ash body with both forearm bevel and a tummy...-cut. Finished in the timeless Mary Kaye see through blonde nitro finish. The slim profile birdseye maple neck has been contoured for comfort and speed. Pickup choice was a bit out-of-the-box as I stumbled on to the Onamac Windery Custom Pickups here on FB (check out their page as these guys deliver the best). We did another little head fake with the non-traditional hardtail bridge and western (reverse) style control plate. The guitar weighs in at a comfortable 6.6 lbs and this build is all thoroughbred. Sleek, powerful and fast. Did I mention how good the Kerry Learned custom Broadcaster/nocaster pickups sound? Smokin' hot!
