Chemical sunscreens are problematic for a variety of reasons, including a tendency to cause rashes and skin irritation, as well as causing buildup of compounds in the body whose effects are not fully known or tested. But now this? Cover up, limit time in the strongest hours of sunlight, and use mineral sunscreen instead.

A lot of personal care is packaged in plastic. We've always tried to find whatever ways we can to use as little plastic as possible, and it's for reasons like this. The oil industry put work into deliberately misleading people about the prospects for recycling plastics. That has resulted in people unfortunately thinking it's just fine to continue to use plastics because they believe those plastics have a future in the recycling stream. That is just not the case though. Plastic recycling costs. We will continue to do what we can to provide sensible packaging that is as sustainable as possible. It's not easy, but it's something we care about.

Food insecurity is very high right now, so if you are lucky enough to have fresh, beautiful food like this broccoli slaw from @flavorthemoments you are very fortunate indeed. Unemployment is still high and many jobs are not coming back for a while. Food pantries across the country are serving all kinds of people regardless of their former income level. Folks may not realize but it’s tricky to qualify for food stamps, and that support network has been gradually reduced anyw...ay over the years. Food pantries fill an important gap that keeps people fed while they figure out long term solutions. I know because I was a recipient of food pantry services during the last economic crash. For a full year food donations helped me get through a divorce and hardship and as a result I was able to hold onto the building where Blissoma was located and continue my business. Donated food is literally why Blissoma exists still today. Over the course of a year I received aid from several different community organizations, and ate a lot of very random food. Fresh vegetables, my favorite and a huge part of overall health, are some of the hardest things to get while on pantry assistance. Most of the donated food is shelf stable, and donated veggies and fruits are often partly rotted. This puts many families at even greater risk of illness as crucial vitamins are then lacking in their diet, and during a pandemic no less! To help address both these issues we are making donations to both @earthdancefarms and @opfoodsearch, and will continue doing so each month as we are able. Earthdance is providing a pay what you can farm stand at the Ferguson farmer’s market and is also donating fresh produce to organizations that are feeding people. These gifts of fresh, organic vegetables will really help keep people well. Operation Food Search has a broad range of programs that benefit over 200k people per month. Their services are crucial right now for many families. It feels really right to get to give back to others during this economic downturn.
