Juneteenth has been a part of our family for some time. You see, Mrs. Flora Blackwells first born son, Horace Peterson expanded the celebration of Juneteenth to Kansas city ! Brought to Kansas City in 1980 by Horace M Peterson III, founder of the Black Archives of Mid-America INC, Juneteenth is an annual heritage celebration and platform that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved Africans in America and provides the backdrop to pay tribute to the founders of our community.... SO WHAT IS JUNETEENTH ? Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. Later attempts to explain this two and a half year delay in the receipt of this important news have yielded several versions that have been handed down through the years. Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. All of which, or none of these versions could be true. Certainly, for some, President Lincoln's authority over the rebellious states was in question. Whatever the reasons, conditions in Texas remained status quo well beyond what was statutory. General Order Number 3 One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of Texas, General Order Number 3 which began most significantly with: "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer." So the very essence of why Juneteenth being recognized IN KC is a thing goes through my uncle Horace Peterson and continues on through his children and through the Black archives and Juneteenth celebrations today. Rest in paradise to Flora Blackwells oldest son Horace Peterson your name still rings bells to this day. Much love and Happy Juneteenth !

This past Wednesday our family honored and remembered our grandfather and Mrs Flora Blackwell late husband Orville Blackwell on what would have been his 94th birthday ! A man of few words but a golden heart he and my grandmother created the shop 50 years ago together and she kept it running all the way home. We would be remiss and not honoring the man that was behind the name of the shop itself mr. Orville Blackwell! Let's be honest, any man that could get Mrs. Flora blackwe...ll to marry him is one hell of a man <3 Happy birthday Grandpa Blackwell Rest in paradise <3

Hello all and happy Memorial Day to all of you and especially our veterans who have kept/keep this country safe ! If you happen to have a moment today, I have a gentle request of correcting something that is a little bit silly in our humble opinion. On Google/Yelp we were left 2 bad reviews that were misguided. If you just enjoy our business if you could take a few moments to leave a small review on Google to correct someone leaving a poor review during the rise of covid-19 ... and our grandmother Mrs. Flora Blackwells passing causing someone to leave a poor review it would be much appreciated ! To editorialize they were misguided or simply we're having a bad day but 2 left 1 stars for each situation. Anywho, have a safe, relaxing, and wonderful holiday !
