Today is V-J Day. On Sept. 2, 1945, the Japanese signed the papers for surrender. Platte County veterans who served in WWII remember this day. From a hospital room, Ray H, heard the news he had only one word for what he felt -RELIEF! All night long on August 14 into the 15th, the day the Japanese initially surrendered, Parker heard hundreds of ships blowing their whistles in a harbor in the Philippines. The war was over. On Sept. 2 more celebration commenced. While se...rving on the USS Macomb, James "Rocky" Tankersley could see the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. On this day, 75 years ago, Rocky witnessed the peace treaty being signed. In 2019, Rocky along with many other WWII veterans shared his story with Platte Co Historical Society (Ben Ferrel Museum); with sadness we have learned that Rocky passed away this spring. These are but a few moments from a few Platte County veterans' memories. Today we honor all WWII veterans. See more
Tip of Our Hat to an Artifact - a Hawk . In honor of restoration work ongoing to the museum we explore a centuries-old masonary tool once used in Platte County and now part of our museum collection.

For many immigrants in the nineteenth century who were escaping persecution, poverty or other hardship, Fourth of July was a new and special holiday. An immigrant from Prussia (Germany), Frederic Krause, in 1882-1883, built the mini mansion that became our museum. We wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July!
The Ben Ferrel Museum and Library are currently open by appointment. To schedule or for more information, call (816) 431-5121. .
It just keeps getting more beautiful this spring! Our flowers -have been spectacular at the museum. In bloom right now--peonies. They are traditional for Memorial Day which was called Decoration Day when it began in the 1800s. While the museum remains closed due to Covid 19, you can still see our flower garden. We look forward to sharing more updates in the future!
Due to Covid-19, we are closing the museum and library until further notice. Please stay safe and well! We will update later.
