In today’s world the idea of racial and ethnic equality is slowly slipping from our reality. There was a time America was considered a melting pot, a place of ethnic diversity. Martin Luther King Jr. believed this, as he said, We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now. He led a remarkable movement supported by thousands to defend this very ideology, but as time quietly moves, like a thief in the night, such passionate and chance I say righte...ous beliefs, soon flicker on the winds of time, and are quickly forgotten. Hatred is amassing; as people strike out, color against color, and religion against religion. It would seem that abhorrence has taken on an identity of it’s own; one not found in a single person, but rather in a culture, in a society, on various continents, and it envelopes our world. Like its disciples, it lives, it breathes, and it grows. Throughout our history there have been those who fought against this hatred, those who believed in equality. We should learn from our history, and not let time cloud our memories. Abraham Lincoln said, It is not merely for to-day, but for all time to come that we should perpetuate for our children's children this great and free government, which we have enjoyed all our lives. Change, however, takes time. It is not a project, but a process. And in this process we should not sit by ideally, waiting for others to pick up the torch of equality, and run. It is each one of us that should run the race. It is each of us who should express our voices against social injustice. It is each of us who need to remember the words of Martin Luther King Jr., when he said Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. Yes! Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream; dream in which he envisioned equality between races, and social justice in our communities. Let us not only remember that dream on this day, but let us keep it alive. Let us say, I will not go quietly into the night! Helen Keller expressed this beautifully; Until the great mass of the people shall be filled with the sense of responsibility for each other's welfare, social justice can never be attained. Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost. As I listen to the great words that are spoken today & reflect back on the great words of yesterday. It seems many have had the very same dream as Martin Luther. So I start to wonderdid his dream birth out of social circumstances, or did it find life in the words that so often were found in his hands? Did his dream first come from the injustice he experienced, or did it come from the three simple words spoken by a person he often read aboutLOVE THY NEIGHBOR. . See more
In today’s world, the idea of free speech is slowly slipping from our reality. Martin Luther King Jr. led a remarkable movement supported by thousands to defend that very right. In memory of the great efforts made by some great people to make our world a better place, I’d like to share some words from each end of the spectrum to hopefully remind the struggle we face has been a struggle many have faced before us. Maybe for a moment you will remember that the goal of the people... should be the same, Freedom, happiness, and equality. Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. Martin Luther King Jr. It is not merely for to-day, but for all time to come that we should perpetuate for our children's children this great and free government, which we have enjoyed all our lives. Abraham Lincoln Until the great mass of the people shall be filled with the sense of responsibility for each other's welfare, social justice can never be attained. Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost. Helen Keller The essence of America that which really unites us is not ethnicity, or nationality or religion. It is an idea, and what an idea it is; that you can come from humble circumstances and do great things. Condoleezza Rice Nobody has ever become poor by giving. How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. Anne Frank We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now. Martin Luther King Jr. In remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr, I hope his words will never be silenced or forgotten. See more
