Be on the lookout for Trumpeter Swans with a two-digit alphanumeric code on a yellow neck band! Your efforts help contribute to science and conservation efforts for these beautiful species by adding additional field information regarding the number of swans it is with, behavior, and location details! The Interior Population Trumpeter Swan Migration Ecology and Conservation project is tracking over 90 GPS tagged swans the past couple of years. A pilot study of 12 swans to dete...rmine the effectiveness of the tags started summer 2019 and another 80 were tagged this summer. Information about the The Trumpeter Swan Society and the multi-state, multi-agency project are available on this website. If you find one, take a photo and report on USGS website and observe behavior and report on the project website. https://trumpeterswan.netlify.app/locations.html See more

Migration will be gates wide open the next couple of nights. We had a catastrophic night on the 28th in downtown KC. In an approximate 30 block area we had 26 birds with 9 still alive and taken to rehab. Six of those have been released. The strikes included Ovenbirds, Common Yellowthroats, Lincoln Sparrows, Northern Waterthrush, Magnolia Warbler. Later that day a deceased Virginia Rail was found. Yesterday we had 7 additional strikes in the same area. I don't have the... data yet from this morning, but you can follow along on iNaturalist, project BirdStrikesKC Please keep your lights off and windows and blinds closed to help the birds safely fly through. https://birdcast.info/migration-to/migration-forecast-maps/

Our friends at the Kansas Ornithological Society have posted the sessions from their fall meeting online. They were co-funders of the Red-tailed Hawk project last year, along with Burroughs Audubon and we are both supporting additional transmitters this year. If you would like to see what the research is all about, here is Lucas DeCicco discussing what they learned from last years transmitters and what questions they hope to answer from the transmitters they will deploy this year. Burroughs Audubon is very excited to be able to support valuable research projects such as this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbLTel1kF4Q

Tonight may be the largest movement of migratory birds in the Mid-west this fall with 559 million expected to be on the move. Keep outdoor lights out and shades and blinds closed to help them move safely through.
