Did you know that the first black-on-black jar by Maria and Julian Martinez was exhibited in July 1920 in Santa Fe? It’s amazing how far this innovation in tec...hnique has come in just 100 years! The jar on the upper left is one of their first pieces and the plate below is how quickly the imagery and style of painting had evolved by 1927. Learn more about these and other exceptional art in clay in our galleries or online. Pac-Man, the biggest arcade game of all time, turns 40 today. Released by the Japanese company Namco on May 22, 1980, Pac-Man was instantly addictive, eating quarters as rapaciously as its protagonist swallowed pixels: https://wired.trib.al/b0hSCbu

Sunrise on Menemsha Pond 1969 Oil on Canvas 18 x 24.25 Location as of [2008] Collection of Jessie Benton The Bentons’ daughter, Jessie, celebrates her bi...rthday on July 10th. On the back of this lovely landscape of Martha’s Vineyard is written Happy Birthday to Jessie from Momy & Dad. Similar to the Lily Pond painting we shared a few weeks ago, this is another idyllic scene, with no people in view. Tom Benton often went to his studio early in the morning, painting in some of the best light of the day. Don’t we all wish we can start our workday with an inspiring view like this? And if you happen to be on the Vineyard this summer, be sure to visit the new exhibition Benton’s Martha’s Vineyard https://mvmuseum.org/exhibitions/. The Benton Home State Historic Site was happy to lend several artifacts for this show, and we hope they get a great turn-out. See more

THIS WEEK IN BENTON HISTORY: BoxOffice May 27, 1963: The Kansas City Art Institute held a special dinner for Walt Disney as an honorary distinguished alumn...us. Disney was not a graduate of the school, but he started out in Kansas Cityhis first studio was Laugh-O-Gram Studio at 1127 E. 31st Street, not far from the mid-town art institute. Thomas Hart Benton was also at the dinner honoring Disney. He and Walt at one point discussed doing a Davy Crockett project together and had a mutual admiration for each other’s work. Benton commented at the dinner, I’m the kind of artist who says the artist is not important. It’s the meaning he makes. This fellow [Disney] has made more meanings for people around the world than anybody. Maybe he is the greatest artist of our day. See more

#ClosedMondays A Dutch architect and furniture designer, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) began his training as an apprentice in his father's cabinetmaking bu...siness and later studied architecture in Utrecht. In the early 1930s, Dutch department store Metz & Co. asked Rietveld to do something unprecedented: design a chair for mass production. In response, Rietveld proposed a Z-shaped perch made from four slices of sturdy elm supported by dovetailed joints and metal screws. The visual simplicity of the armless, legless, cantilevered form--called the Zig Zag chair--belies its relatively complex construction and remains an expression of Rietveld's application of the tenets of the De Stijl movement to his work. See the Snite's Zig Zag chair in the first floor Ashbaugh Decorative Arts Gallery. We are open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays until 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 12 noon-5 p.m. We are closed Sundays and Mondays. Abstract Tablecloth 1911-12 Oil on Ecru Satin fabric 50.25 x 35.5 Location as of [Current] Thomas Hart Benton Home & Studio We’re very excited to share t...his unusual piece with you! Over the winter of 1911/12, 22-year-old Tom Benton moved back into his parents’ home after finishing his art studies in Paris, France. During this brief break in Neosho MO, and before embarking on his career in New York City, Benton painted an abstract design on a satin tablecloth. At the bottom center he included his mother’s monogram, EWB [Elizabeth Wise Benton]. Luckily, Mrs. Benton took the tablecloth with her when she moved to Long Island shortly after. This is one of the few early artworks to survive the fire that destroyed the Benton homestead in 1917. Eventually the painted fabric ended up at the New Britain Connecticut Art Museum. A few years ago, New Britain offered it to our historic site. Although the tablecloth had received some conservation work in the past, it was ready for another cleaning. The Friends of the Benton Home paid to have a treatment, stabilization, and Plexiglas encasement performed by Van Witt Fine Art Conservators. The unique, early Benton artwork is now on display in the dining room, and we encourage you to come by for a tour of the Benton Home to see it. See more

Thomas Hart Benton was inspired to paint "Trail Riders" after a 1964 trip that he took with a good friend to the Canadian Rockies. The artist recollected that t...hey had ridden from Banff to Mount Assiniboine in 9 and a half hours over the course of two dayshis first horseback trip in more than 30 years. Mount Assiniboine is known as the Matterhorn of North America because of its triangular shape. The artist represented himself and his traveling companion as miniscule figures on horseback at the bottom of the composition, dwarfed by the majestic landscape. Imagine you are standing in the space depicted here. What would you smell? Hear? Taste? Thomas Hart Benton, "Trail Riders," 1964-1965, oil on canvas, National Gallery of Art, Washington, Gift of the Artist
