Did you know that within an Assisted Living community, individuals with memory loss do not all necessarily live in the memory care neighborhood? In fact, nationally 70% of individuals living in assisted living have some form/stage of memory loss. Some individuals with memory loss can still safely reside in Assisted Living because there are such varying stages and needs of those with dementia. Want to learn more? Did you know that there are OVER 100 different types of dementia? One of those types is Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD). There are so many unknowns surrounding PDD including the understanding of the disease progression from Parkinson's disease to PDD. While it is possible that an individual with Parkinson's disease will never develop PDD, up to 80% of those with Parkinson's will eventually experience dementia. Generally, the progression from Parkinson's disease to PDD is about 10 years. Want to learn more? Follow the link: https://www.alz.org//types-of/parkinson-s-disease-dementia

Overaccommodation is using over simplified words or sentences and/or speaking louder and more slowly than you would a normal person without first ascertaining that the individual is hard of hearing or has memory loss. Studies show that these forms of communication impede the resident experience by increasing resistance to hands-on care. Want to learn more? Cognitive reserve is developed through a lifetime of education, curiosity, and engagement. Research has shown that individuals with greater cognitive reserve are better able to fend off degenerative brain changes associated with dementia and can help an individual to function better for longer if they do develop dementia. At Anthology Senior Living, we believe in the power of food to heal and bring us together. Each month, Anthology Senior Living introduces two nutrient-rich superfoods to our menu, in collaboration with culinary partner Morrison Living. Superfoods earn their name by being high in micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and healthy fats. This Holiday month, tea and chia seeds are our star superfoods. Our Executive Chefs pair these nutritious ingredie...nts with the freshest, local produce to create elegant beverages and savory or sweet dishes. On a wintry afternoon, what could be more comforting than a hot cup of tea? Tea is our featured superfood beverage of December and it offers a delightful afternoon treat whether hot or iced. Rich in micronutrients called polyphenols, tea is known to have many potential health benefits. Studies have shown tea may help boost the immune system, decrease inflammation, and may even help reduce the risk of various types of cancer. Tiny, crunchy Chia seeds are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and bone nutrients. The seeds can be ground into a powder or stirred into puddings and cereals. The fatty acids in chia seeds can help raise High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as the good cholesterol, by helping remove other forms of cholesterol from the bloodstream. Chia seeds are also high in quality proteins and may help reduce blood sugar. Our chefs are whipping up signature chia seed puddings at our communities. Consider featuring Chia seeds on your holiday table by creating your own seasonal Chia pudding infused with red berries and garnished with a candy-cane. Tea and chia seeds are two of the delicious, nutritious food and drinks that nourish and sustain our community. This Holiday season, our communities will be serving up the freshest, tastiest appetizers, sides, main dishes and desserts. Expect to see unique offerings such as creamy mushroom barley soup, bacon-wrapped figs, local rainbow carrots, and whole roasted beef tenderloin served with rosemary, thyme, garlic, shallot and merlot. Mmm!
In fact, approximately 70% of individuals with Down Syndrome will also develop Alzheimer's disease, typically starting in their 30's. Scientists say that this is likely due to the fact that individuals with Down syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21, which contains the gene that is also responsible for generating amyloid proteins. These amyloid proteins develop into the plaques that are deposited along the neurons in the brain, the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Want to learn more?
