BRITAIN'S FIRST MODERN DESTINATION SPA Where you'll be encased in paraffin wax to sweat away the pounds! Post war, The Age of the Spa was in full swing, with mo...dernized spas, beauty schools and even destination spas cropping up through Europe and America. The first modern destination spa was the Pelham Beauty Farm in Hertfordshire. Every year they would host a slimming retreat week for ladies who quietly wanted to detox and shed away the pounds. The daily routine would incorporate exercise and detoxifying smoothies, as well as daily treatments that fully encased the body in paraffin wax! The theory is that the retention of body heat and spike in perspiration would "melt" body fat (however obviously this just eliminates water weight). One interesting thing to not however are the daily seaweed baths...that still are beneficial to this very day. Following their morning regimens, guests would then be treated to electrical therapy to the face, neck and ankles (questionable), facial steamer (that's good!), suction therapy to "pull excess fluid through he skin" (questionable), and finally a weighing in to see how much weight was lost. Guests finished the day in cocktail attire with fruit juice "all around"!
