Practicing Gratitude as a Family Being thankful often means we’ve taken some time to slow down, think about the things that are most important to us, and remember the people who have made positive impacts on our lives. And practicing gratitude even in difficult times is rewarding for the whole family. When we focus on what we are grateful for, it brings us happiness. Use the activities below to explore how your family can take time to recognize the things they’re grateful... for on Thanksgiving Day and all year long. Incorporate gratitude into your routines to create a habit of being thankful by asking questions like: Point out when someone does something nice or helpful for your child. Your box of books is so heavy! I saw your sister helped you carry it into the other room. What can you do to let her know that you appreciate her help? At dinnertime, before you go to sleep, or before your family starts the day, ask What is something we’re grateful for today?

Family Traditions: Cooking and Learning Together Family mealtime traditions whether for a special holiday or during a routine family dinner are huge opportunities for children to learn. In the kitchen, they can learn about nutrition, explore everyday math skills like measuring, and maybe learn a thing or two about how your family history influences the recipes and meals you make. Practice manners and conversation skills like listening, storytelling, and asking questions w...hile sharing family traditions with discussion questions like: Take the opportunity to tell your child the story of their family, and how much you appreciated Grandma’s mashed potatoes or Uncle David’s famous turkey. Ask: Do you know where our family is from? Traditions are habits or customs that are passed down and shared with family. Ask your child: What are your favorite traditions that our family has?

You're Invited to A Special Virtual Event: Make the Most of Learning at Home with PBS KIDS With children across the country learning at home, parents and caregivers are facing new challenges. PBS KIDS invites parents and caregivers of children ages 5 to 8 to come together for a discussion with educators, a child psychologist and parents. During this one hour virtual event, you will get ideas on how to use PBS KIDS resources to encourage everyday playful learning. We’ll also answer questions and share tips on how you can maintain a strong connection with your child’s school, help your child stay motivated to learn, and develop a learning routine for your family.
