Fifty years ago today, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed by President Johnson, and became the law of the land. The law provides many important protections.... It prohibits discrimination in public accommodation on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin. Title VII of the law, which to this day is used to protect employee's rights, prohibits discrimination in employment because of sex, race, color, religion or national origin. This important law has led to many others, and more importantly, it has stood for half a century for the notion that in the United States, we do not countenance discrimination, even by private businesses. This is a principle that underlies much of what we do as a firm, and we felt we needed to take some time to remember this momentous occasion.

My partner, Katherine Haug, wrote about the Missouri Non-Partisan Court Plan. Currently, Missouri judges are selected in a non-partisan, non-political manner, but Amendment 3 would change that. When politics mixes with courts, it has been shown that judges will tend to favor those whom they owe political favors. For those who vote in Missouri, it's very important that you vote against Amendment 3.
