February is #BlackHistoryMonth! This annual celebration recognizes the achievements of Black Americans and highlights their role in American History. How do you celebrate Black History Month?
Between 1812 and 1865, more than 300 African-American men and women came to the Old Courthouse to sue for their freedom. For many of the people who sued the dec...isions took weeks or years and most of them were not granted freedom. One of the most notable of these "Freedom Suits was the case of Dred and Harriet Scott who filed suit at the Old Courthouse in 1846. A Freedom Suit was one of the only options within the courts for enslaved people to attempt to free themselves and their loved ones. The legal reasons a slave might sue usually fell into three categories. First, the slave had been taken to a territory where slavery was not allowed by law. Second, the person was being wrongly held as a slave after being legally freed in a will or by purchase. Third, that it could be proven that the mother of a child being held in bondage was not legally a slave. Launching a legal suit in court to gain one’s freedom was not easy. Slaves had the burden of proof upon them. The Scott family didn’t find the freedom they sought through the legal challenge, but their courage and determination in filling this case helped bring about the Civil War and freedom from enslavement for all Americans. Now that we've all settled down from the Superbowl excitement, here are some #BlackHistory sports pioneers. Fritz Pollard and Bobby Marshall were the first Black American players allowed in the NFL. Sadly, in 1926, all Black players were dropped from their teams and there was an unofficial ban/ "gentlemen's agreement" that kept them out of the league for 20 years.... Kenny Washington was signed to the Los Angeles Rams in 1946. Making Washington the first Black player of the modern NFL era. #BHM2021

Rebecca Lee Crumpler is recognized as the first Black female physician. She also published what is thought to be the very first medical text by a Black American author! Someone has to be the first, why not you? #BHM2021 #BlackHistoryMonth
