An independent review of hundreds of thousands of stops conducted by Los Angeles police officers last year has found that racial disparities previously identified in a Times investigation were in part the result of failed strategies to use traffic and other minor violations as a pretext to identify or suppress more serious crimes. Those strategies subjected Black and Latino drivers to far more stops than white drivers, even though Black and Latino people were less likely to be caught with contraband, and were of limited effectiveness in identifying evidence of illegal firearms or other serious crimes, the report by the LAPD Inspector General Mark Smith’s office found. WASHINGTON The Senate floor debate regarding President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett kicked into high gear Friday afternoon. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, attempted to delay the effort by forcing the chamber into a closed session to debate the nominee privately, but it was just a bump in the road toward Barrett’s confirmation. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, said the Democrats have given up on blocking Barrett’s nomination. [ 196 more words ] http://jaylonradio.news.blog//despite-democratic-roadbloc/

Los Angeles County lifts more restrictions LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles County health officials said Wednesday that while the county has seen major drops in coronavirus case numbers over the past three months, there have been "concerning" upticks in recent weeks delaying a move to a less-restrictive tier of the state's economic reopening roadmap. But despite those concerns and the county's continued banishment in the most restrictive "purple" tier of the state's matrix, health officials said more restrictions on business operations will be lifted this week, including: [ 924 more words ] http://jaylonradio.news.blog//los-angeles-county-lifts-mo/

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 39 new coronavirus-related deaths and 713 new cases on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Officials blamed the reduced number of cases, and their late arrival Tuesday, on technical problems with data-reporting systems. The numbers lifted the county’s totals since the pandemic began to 290,009 positive cases and 6,912 deaths. Officials said 2,913,000 individuals have now been tested, with 9% testing positive.
