As the 30th Anniversary of Desert Storm comes to an end, we would like to tell one final story of Lt. Col. Rob Sweetness Sweet, deputy commander of the 476th Fighter Group, our wing’s geographically separated unit Moody Air Force Base, GA. As a young first lieutenant, on Sweet’s 30th mission in Desert Storm, enemy forces shot down his A-10 Thunderbolt II southwest of Basra, Iraq. Sweet would then spend 19 days as an Iraqi prisoner. During this time, he experienced beatings,... fought of disease and dealt with emotional and mental torment. Thankfully, due to a prisoner exchange effort, Sweet returned back to America. Completing twenty years on active duty and a current reservist and active A-10 pilot, Sweet embodies resilience, determination, and a testament to service before self. Where were you in 1991? On this day, 30 years ago, then 1st Lt. John "Karl" Marks and flight lead, Capt. Eric "Fish" Solomonson flew a trio of missions over Kuwait and Iraq, destroying 23 tanks, using infrared AGM-65 missiles and the infamous GAU-8 cannon. The 442d Fighter Wing is very fortunate to have Lt. Col. Marks, a pilot with the 303rd Fighter Squadron, who has experimented with and taught numerous technological advances on the A-10 platform over three decades.... "Being able to get out there and fly the A-10 keeps me coming to work every day. It’s still challenging, it’s still awesome, and they keep bringing new technology and new ways of fighting which keeps it relevant. We may not be the fastest aircraft, but when we talk about the aircraft’s abilities from a close air support platform we are simply still the best" said Lt. Col. Marks. *Warthog Wednesday* Did you know, A-10 pilots wear a Hybrid Optical-based Inertial Tracker (HObIT), a type of helmet mounted cueing system for more accurate weapons delivery? This device, affixed to one eye and mounted onto the helmet and plugged into the jet, augments the pilot's view through the canopy allowing for realistic target tracking in line with the user's movements.... It may look like something out of a sci-fi film, but this small piece of technology allows for full color real-time target data, location of friendly forces, and dynamic flight and mission data delivered safely into the pilot's line of sight. This capability allows the user to remain head-up and eyes-out of the cockpit with greatly enhanced situational awareness. Pictured: Capt. Garrett "Peso" Perez, 303rd Fighter Squadron pilot, taxis wearing a helmet fitted with the Hybrid Optical-based Inertial Tracker (HObIT) on Feb. 22, 2021, at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. The HObIT provides the A-10C Thunderbolt II pilots a central interface allowing pilots to use their helmet-mounted cueing system for accurate weapons delivery. #AccelerateChangeorLose #ReserveReady #ReadyAF 10th Air Force Whiteman Air Force Base United States Air Force
