Happy early birthday to visionary conservationist and 26th President of the United States, Theodore Teddy" Roosevelt! This week we honor his impressive leg...acy, which includes the oldest conservation organization founded by Teddy himself, Boone and Crockett Club. Founded in 1887, this organization established the principles of wildlife and habitat conservation, hunter ethics, and many of the institutions, expert agencies, science and funding mechanisms for conservation. Colder weather leads many animals to look for warmer, sheltered places to spend the winter. Sometimes, that means they make their way into climate-controlled bu...ildings, as was the case with this Midland Brownsnake that was discovered in the library of our park headquarters. According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, this small and harmless species prefers moist environments and feeds on earthworms, snails, slugs, and soft-bodied insects. Despite its small size, this is a fully grown adult and is actually closer to the larger end of the size range for this species. You can learn more about the Midland Brownsnake from the MDC website: https://nature.mdc.mo.gov/discover-nat//midland-brownsnake
Did you know that sewage systems were invented to help control the spread of diseases like cholera? We can't take this kind of infrastructure for granted. On this #WorldToiletDay, consider what to flush and what not to flush at https://bit.ly/3fdA0xr.
"For the last four decades, the Aleys have also conducted and consulted on hydrogeological studies of caves and karst systems across the globe. Much of their in...novative work has become standard practice in the field of dye-tracing and their services have been contracted by the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, MDC, and other states, counties, and municipalities." Congratulations, Tom and Cathy!

Do you love Lake Taneycomo as much as we do? We will be examining the challenges we face; whether it's silting, erosion, nonpoint/point source pollution, the health of the fishery, etc. you may want to get more info on the upcoming Lake Taneycomo Watershed Management Plan effort. In conjunction with the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute from MSU, we'll be working over the next couple of years to develop a plan that the USEPA and Missouri will evaluate. But w...hat good is a plan/study without the input of those affected by any recommendations that may come out of it? If you are interested in participating, please reach out to us at [email protected]. We can give you more details then. But act fast: first kickoff meeting is October 22nd via Zoom.

Growing a healthy and water friendly lawn and garden can help promote water quality! You can also reduce water usage, keep grass clippings out of the storm drains, and avoid using pesticides to help as well.
Northwest Arkansas continues to be rated as one of the best places to live across the country! With this popularity, projections tell us to expect a quadrupling in population over the next few decades! This is why it's so important for communities, large and small, to make it a priority to implement low impact development (LID), a sustainable solution for stormwater management. Developers, policy makers, and anyone else who is interested in LID should register now for the LID webinar presented by Construction Eco Services and the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Extension on October 22 at 1:30 pm.
