http:// GONE FISHING // The flag on the beach is red today and my phone signals warnings of rip tide and dangerous surf. Meanwhile, the waves seem to frolic and play in front of me, dancing with power and rolling on in an endless show of God’s might and glory. Sitting atop a beach chair with sand covering my feet, I read today in Luke chapter 5 about Jesus calling his first disciples. It too was a beach scene. The people pressed in to hear Jesus sharing the good news of Go...d. Jesus jumped into Simon Peter’s fishing boat while the crew untangled the nets, and the two of them pushed off the bank out into the waters. He spoke to the people from the boat and then asked Simon to take them out into the deeper water, letting down his nets again. Simon told Jesus they’d already been up all night fishing and had caught nothing. These were fisherman by trade. This is what they knew best! They had the boats, the pros on board, and they’d worked for hours in the peak time of day to haul in a catch - and still nothing! He did it anyhow, and the nets nearly broke with the amount of fish they hauled in this time. Simon even had to phone a friend or two, waving over James and John to help reel them all in. The boats teetered bearing the weight of the catch. Simon Peter kneeled before Jesus in astonishment and with deep conviction. Jesus then issued the invitation to join him and, together, seek after an even greater catch. And Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.’ And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. Luke 5:10-11 We head home today, and so I wonder what heart souvenir I’ll take back from this journey. I hope it will be a renewed sense of awe and wonder at God’s creation and a greater measure of trust in the plans he has for me. Where is God’s hand at work in the world around you, and what will it take for you to drop everything and follow Jesus? As we learn to love God with all our our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30), we are also to love our neighbors, invite others along, and pursue the Lord together.... Just like Jesus did. Just like His first disciples did. And in this kind of faith-filled, relational living, He promised to be with is. THIS is discipleship. Disciples are lifelong learners and followers of Jesus. Disciples of Jesus Christ make other disciples of Jesus Christ. The Christian life is the discipled life and the discipling life.
