This program is designed especially for young scientists, ages three to six, and their families and friends. Sessions are aimed at providing opportunities for little ones and their caregivers to wonder, play and discover together. Full details here: www.slsc.org/programs/discover-science-with-me/

Meet Rigel, our new Blue Linckia Sea Star. This odd looking critter spends its time roaming around the tank eating algae and organic film, making it a valuable member of our clean-up crew! Rigel is named after the brightest star in the constellation of Orion, which is classified as a blue supergiant. Blue supergiants are some of the brightest stars in the sky, and Rigel is now the brightest star in our tank!

This week’s featured artifact from our Collection Department is a Wonder Woman Comic Book. Did you know that early Wonder Woman comics included a feature called Wonder Women of History? In each issue with this feature, Wonder Woman stepped aside to give voice to the real life stories of exceptional and often silenced women of history. The feature ran for 54 issues and covered fifty different women in science, technology, aviation, public works, and medicine. This comic has this feature, highlighting aviator Harriet Quimby. Our Silver Laced Wyandotte Rooster is crowing! After a very shy start (he would hide in the bush and crow), he is now belting out his crow several times a day in very public view. While we are not at SLSC in the very early hours to know if he crows pre-dawn, we assume does. A study in 2013 found that roosters rely on their own internal clockthey do not need light cluesto make their pre-dawn announcement. Roosters however, don’t just crow in the early hours of the morning. We hear him several times a day. On your next visit, stop by our GROW gallery and give a listen. You might just get to hear him crow!

This week’s featured artifact from our Collection Department is a shell gorget. This shell gorget has an incised design of a sun and moon surrounded by a snake. A gorget is a type of ornament worn on a necklace. The Mississippians often incised, or engraved, decorations into their pottery as well as their ornaments. The designs are more than artistic expressions, they are symbols with meaning to the maker and other members of a Mississippian community. The sun and the moon were symbols of both agricultural and spiritual significance.
