Our newest neurosurgeon Dr. Matthew Pierson recently performed glioma (brain tumor) removal surgery using the newest FDA-approved digital imaging with microscope guided surgical instruments. Glioma brain tumors grow with "finger-like" projections that extend into different parts of the brain. Our 58-year-old patient Michael was eager to undergo this new procedure which involved him first drinking a dye that made the tiny tumor projections illuminate in bright pink and magen...ta. The differentiating colors help increase the neurosurgeon's visibility under special light for more thorough tumor removal. Michael went home after a few days in the hospital. In the initial randomized, controlled clinical trial performed in the US, patients who had surgery with this new technique had twice the rate of survival without progression after six months compared to patients who didn't receive care using the new technique.
