Silver Dollar Memories In 1954, an 80-plus year-old traveling salesman named Charlie Sullivan visited Mavel Cave, and told the Herschends that he had been born in the general store of a mining town named Marmaros that had stood at the entrance to the cave. There had, he said, been 28 residents and several buildings, including a hotel, school, pottery shop, and a furniture factory. After searching through leaves and brush, Sullivan found the foundations to most of the old buil...dings. It was at that moment, that the idea of recreating the 1880s mining town was born. The next year, construction began on the little 1880s Ozark Mountain village, and in 1960, the dream of recreating the town of Marmaros (Greek for marble) was realized. That year, Silver Dollar City was opened. 125,000 people visited Silver Dollar City in 1960, four times as many people than the number who toured Marvel Cave. Pete Herschend has been quoted as saying, "We discovered we were in the theme park business." Over 60 years later, Silver Dollar City is still growing and people still love to tour Marvel Cave. We get a good many families at Quality Inn West who are just plum mixed-up. By that, we mean that part of the family want to go see a show or ride a Ferris wheel, and part of the family want to go to the lake. In fact, we get a great deal of families like that. We suppose the reason is because we are about the closest hotel in Branson to Table Rock Lake. We are located on the west end of the 76 Strip, on the corner of Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, just a hop, skip, and a ...jump from the Table Rock Dam. We reckon that the other direction, Indian Point is just over a couple of ridges and through a couple of hollers. Either way, we ain't far from the lake. Since I mentioned that we're on the 76 Strip, then you must know that we ain't very far from any of those shows where they play fancy guitars and beller like my old hound dog. We're right close to all those Ferris wheels and coasters and such, too. But, that lake... weeell doggies, fishing is good on Table Rock. The lake is deep and still and warm and pretty, and it's home to some of the biggest bass you'll ever pull out of the water. Crappie, and catfish, too. If y'all are angling for a trout, then you should know we're even closer to parts of Taneycomo than we are Table Rock. Taneycomo is a cold water lake, formed from the waters off the bottom of Table Rock, and it's chocked full of trout, both brown and rainbow. Your boat, you ask? Yep, we can usually accommodate boats, too, depending on how busy we are. If you want to plug in your battery, then you need to bring your own extension cords and duck tape.
