"I always had myself convinced that programming wasn’t for me. I told myself it would be too difficult. I reminded myself that I wasn’t that great at math. I’d been told by a number of adults that if you want to be a programmer you have to be a math wiz. For some reason I built up this imaginary idea of what programming was, and that it was not attainable for me. ...Continue reading

"I had an idea. I wanted to create a website where therapists could get together and share ideas on how to treat patients. I talked to a friend who was a programmer and he kinda laughed and said he wouldn’t help but told me I should make it on my own. I started learning to code but I wasn’t really focused and didn’t set any attainable GOALS. After about 3 months, I STOPPED. ... I started up again about 2 years later. Unfortunately I didn’t have any real FOCUS again and it took me about a year to understand what I wanted to do, which was web development. I then narrowed down what I wanted to learn and started learning "Ruby on Rails", but unfortunately nobody is hiring junior developers in rails in St. Louis, MO. So then I started looking at was being USED. I was kinda torn between learning JavaScript, Java and C#. During that time I had made a few websites for local businesses and applied and was turned down for LaunchCode. I then changed my focus to trying to come up with a project to build so I could showcase my skills. That’s when I started going to meetups and met Michael the lead instructor of Nexul Academy. After going to a few events, I realized that Michael had extensive programming experience and had a lot of connections in the St. Louis area. I discussed the program with my wife and while we had a new born, I joined Nexul Academy where there is FOCUS on a few professional projects and on 2 very in demand languages, JavaScript and C#. During the program I was able to get an apprenticeship early on and then was offered a FULL TIME job. I now use C# and JavaScript building out software tests as a software quality assurance engineer." This is a true success story from Nevin H, a former occupational therapist (OTR/L PRN):
