From the Desk of Pastor Gordon Coleman: I share with a heavy heart that our beloved church Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Holts Summit, Missouri has be...en the victim of terrible vandalism. Mt. Vernon was established by slaves in the early 1800s and was rebuilt in 1869. This small building has been the place of worship for a small predominately African American congregation for nearly two centuries. The vandals destroyed the place where many souls were saved, people fed and spirits uplifted. Thankfully the vandalism that occurred at the new church God blessed us with was not as severe. Please pray that this type of evil ends and that God will give us the resources and strength to restore this His historic building. Gordon Coleman, Pastor

Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church is a church that I love. It’s not a mega church located in a big city, instead it’s a small country church located in Hol...ts Summit, MO. Mt. Vernon is so much more than a church, it’s a safe haven, it’s our peace of mind, its rich history comforts us, my grandmother, grandfather, father, daughter, brother, and loved ones are buried there. Mt. Vernon cemetery has unmarked graves of black civil war soldiers, slaves and black convicts dating back to the early 1800’s . Our ancestors built this church and were proud of their accomplishments. The church still stands on its original foundation constructed from logs cut and carried by horse and buggy. When we finally outgrew the old church our small membership raised money to build a new church. One of the major fundraising events was a catering project. The women at Mt. Vernon who were affectionately known as the church ladies cooked at least three times weekly and sold hundreds of meals to the Missouri Legislators and the community. In all, our women’s auxiliary raised over $10,000 to begin building, and we broke ground on September 11, 2001. As long as I can remember, Mt. Vernon has experienced vandalism. Our mailboxes were burned down, windows broken and shot out, beer cans strewn over the cemetery, tombstones destroyed, trash thrown at the church, and the doors at the old and new churches were kicked in along with much more destruction. We have installed cameras and lights over the church, and they have been continuously knocked down and destroyed. Early this morning, November 25, 2020, individuals destroyed our old church and vandalized the new church. In the old church they knocked down walls, shot out windows and doors, shot fireworks in the church edifice, pulled out the heating and cooling unit, destroyed carpeting, turned over and broke pews, tore down the original podium, turned over our refrigerator and stove, and destroyed the ceiling fans. In the new church, they broke all the cameras, broke the windows, tore out the alarms and left sternos burning in the storage room. The Callaway County Sheriff’s department is leading the investigation and they are helping tremendously. We are really concerned about these acts of vandalism and believe the community should be aware of what has occurred. Please share this post in hopes we can find the individuals who are responsible for the destruction to God’s house. See more
