Leo O'Laughlin, Inc Donates $35,000 to Support Literacy in Macon and the Surrounding Communities Senator Cindy O'Laughlin delivered a $35,000 donation to the Family Literacy Center of Macon on behalf of Leo O'Laughlin, Inc. on October 21, 2020. "Without the ability to read a person's life cannot be all it's meant to be," stated Senator Cindy O'Laughlin. "We so appreciate kind and generous community members like the O'Laughlin and Terry families, who see merit in educating ou...r communities. Education is one of the best ways to add value to your community. Better educated adults means more knowledgeable parents, voters, and employees. Statistically, the number one indicator of how a child will perform in school, is the education level of their mother. The trickle down effect on our community that adult education has is immeasurable," said Lydia McClellan. The Family Literacy Center offers courses in reading, language, and math to assist adults in improving their basic literacy skills. The majority of the students who seek literacy services are working toward earning their High School Equivalency certificate. Additionally, the FLC offers English Language Learner classes and K-12 Tutoring. All of these services are offered free of charge through the generosity of donors like Leo O'Laughlin, Inc. The Macon Family Literacy Center is a partner of the Macon R-1 School District Adult Education and Literacy program, where AEL Director Lydia McClellan oversees literacy classrooms in Macon, Hannibal, Brookfield, Chillicothe, Kirksville, LaBelle, Shelbina, and Monroe City. Today, Graphic Design students learned how to use a grommet machine on scrimm and vinyl banners. This is a customer banner designed by Macon Junior, Sierra Richardson (not pictured) and printed on our large format Canon printer. Printed banners are another new product/service that design students are learning this year thanks to upgrades our class has been able to make over the last 2 years.
