Kiosk Gallery 15.05.2021

One of our favorite shows we’ve ever done at Kiosk was in 2016 with Charles Jones - he was such a special person with an interesting vision for his work, an exceptional generosity, and a charming professionalism that made anything seem possible. He passed away just over a year ago, and we are deeply saddened by this loss. Today we are remembering Charles and celebrating the impact he made.

We join the family and friends celebrating the life of Sid Garrison, who passed away today. He was an incredibly talented, very kind person, and we felt very lucky to work with him. Rest in peace, Sid.

We are wrapping up our current exhibition with Brandon Forrest Frederick this weekend. You may still schedule a private viewing Friday, or come by during open hours on Saturday from noon to 4 pm (please wear a mask - we have masks available if you need one). We’re also sharing an essay by David Alpert, written in response to the show, on our website - see the link in bio and scroll down to the essay.

OPEN CALL - Beyond 2020 Vision In 2020, the ever-present injustices of our world are being revealed in powerful and compelling ways. How can you create lasting change? How has your imagination been activated to new possibilities? What do you want to remember about this moment in history? What does the view look like from your window?... Kiosk is seeking submissions of artist-made postcards, mail art, and writings for a rolling open call (there is currently no deadline). You may start sending mail art now, and submissions will begin to go up on the walls in August. If you need assistance with materials, we can send you a packet of blank postcards and stamps to get you started please contact us with your address and we’ll put it in the mail right away! This exhibition is made possible in part by a grant from the Charlotte Street Foundation's Art Where You’re At: Socially Distant Art Projects. See the full details at kioskgallerykc.com/open-call.

We don’t know when we’ll have another traditional exhibition at Kiosk, in which an artist presents their work and the public communes in our space. For the time being, we’re rethinking how we use the space, and hope to put forth a series of interactions that respond to the current circumstances and imagine possibilities for the future, beginning with an open call for mail art. You’ll find a link to the open call on the about page of our website. We’ve been paying attentio...n to the calls from our community for organizations to be more transparent about combating systemic racism. We’ve added another section to our about page that talks a little bit about what we’re working on, and it links to a list of organizations we’ve supported and our current reading list (with a bit of context from Black journalists on the things that can, and can not, be accomplished through simply reading). It’s a huge privilege to be able to have this space at Kiosk, and we hope to use that privilege to help bring the vision of our community to life.
