We could see some snow tonight and tomorrow morning. Public Works crews are out treating the streets today. The pre-treatment mixture of beet juice and calcium chloride works for about a week. If we do get snow, crews will be in to make sure the emergency snow routes are clear. Please be careful.

Monday's trash routes are running late today due to the holiday double-route pickup and staff shortages. If our trucks haven't been by, please leave your trash out at the curbside. It could be early evening before many up the pickups are completed. We intend to work until the trucks are filled to capacity. Thank you for your patience, and thanks to the Sanitation Department for getting the job done!

Upon hearing news of a light wintery mix in tonight’s forecast, we would like to remind residents to be aware of winter parking regulations. Please remember to keep the roads clear of parked vehicles when there are 2 or more inches of snow present (as indicated on the Snow Route signs posted throughout the city). Keeping the roads unobstructed of parked cars at those times will insure the city employees and their plows can do their best effort.

The Jackson Parks & Recreation Department is in the process of winterizing and closing most of the restrooms and water fountains in all of the city parks for the winter. However, please know there are two restroom facilities in the City Park which stay open year-round. They are located on Parkview St. (near Field No. 5) and Optimist Hill Dr. (near Safety City and Rotary Lake). Crews will do their best to keep snow and ice clear from the recreation trails and sidewalks in the ...park and at restrooms locations during winter weather events. Remember that trail users are always welcomed at the Jackson Civic Center walking track and restrooms during normal business hours. The Civic Center walking track has a daily entry fee of $2.00 during normal operating hours; and $1.00 from 7:00 9:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. Please plan accordingly while enjoying our outdoor recreation trails throughout the winter season. For more information, please contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 573-204-8848, visit us online at jacksonmo.org, or connect with us Facebook.com/JacksonMO.

REMINDER: Halloween is not a City sanctioned event, but rather a nationally recognized holiday. Jackson has no trick-or-treat regulations and no established start or end times. We only suggest that everyone please use safe judgement on when and where to trick-or-treat. All residents who decide to participate, however, should adhere to public health recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center. If your household choose...s not to participate PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR PORCH LIGHT. Trick-or-treaters should show respect by NOT visiting any home with their porch light off. We look forward to families and residents voluntarily participating in trick-or-treating this year. With the proper guidelines and behaviors we believe this festive outdoor activity can be safely enjoyed as in years past. For Jackson families considering a different approach to Halloween, please don’t forget the Jackson Police & Fire Departments will be hosting a Drive-Thru Trick-or-Treat Event on Saturday night from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm (or until they run out of candy). The event will be held in the rear parking lot of the Police & Fire Complex at 525 S. Hope St. Guests will enter using the S. Hope St. entrance (across from Sonic) and exit onto W. Jackson Blvd. The candy will be placed in bags and it will be a drive-thru only event. Please remain in your vehicles at all times. Halloween can be safe and enjoyable with a little preparation, so talk with your goblins and may your Halloween be an enjoyable evening.

On Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Jackson Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 18th opportu...nity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the Jackson Fire Complex at 525 South Hope St. (Sites cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Last fall, Americans turned in nearly 883,000 pounds of prescription drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. DEA, along with its law enforcement partners, has now collected nearly 6,350 tons of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications since the inception of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative in 2010. To keep everyone safe, collection sites will follow local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations. This will be a drive thru event, so weather will not be a factor. No one will be allowed to exit their vehicle and we request when dropping off the medications, a mask be worn. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The FDA also provides information on how to properly dispose of prescription drugs. More information is available here: https://www.fda.gov//where-and-how-dispose-unused-medicines. For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 24 Take Back Day event, go to www.DEATakeBack.com or contact Cpl. Rick Whitaker at [email protected] or call 573-243-3151 ext. 2111.

The October 13th precautionary boil water advisory issued for the affected water service area near Wal-Mart Supercenter in Jackson has been LIFTED. Water bacteria samples were taken and sent to an outside lab for testing. The lab confirmed this morning that test results showed no contamination. This confirms that the City of Jackson’s water is safe for consumption without boiling and customers can freely drink and use their water. For more information, please call 573-243-2300 or visit www.jacksonmo.org.
