This winter, make friends with a dashing young man, who may love dashing through some snow: Birch! Birch is very snuggly and affectionate, he loves attention from people, and he loves giving hugs to all of his favorite humans! He loves to play fetch, especially with balls that squeak, and he has tons of fun practicing agility. Birch does well on leash walks (aside from those irresistible occasional bursts of energy and excitement) and loves walks in nature. He's a smartypants... who loves to learn and has been great at learning his training and behavior tricks. He'll sit before taking treats and is very gentle with taking treats from hands. Also, he's potty trained! What's not to love? To learn more about Birch or any of our other playful pets, visit our website (indepmo.org/AnimalServices/AdoptableAnimals) and browse around! When you decide who you want to meet, you can fill out a pre-adoption survey on our website and email it to us. Then, call (816) 325-7207 (ext. 2) and ask to make an appointment for a digital meeting! We can’t wait to send you home with your new furry best friend!

Update: owner has been found. Thank you to everyone for your help! This morning, two dogs were found near Westport and Northern. The white scruffy one (pictured) is female and remaining with finder. The other was a neutered, senior chocolate lab, which is injured and staying with a vet. Both were chipped, but owner information was not up-to-date. Any information on the current owners would be appreciated.

This Meowl-O-Ween season, don’t forget to adopt the purrfect movie watching companion, Bob! Bob can’t wait to go home, hang out on the couch, and watch movies while you wait for trick-or-treaters. He’s a big ole sweetheart, and loves to spend time with people. He reaches up with soft paws to greet his favorite people with meows and purrs. Bob has giant adorable fluffy paws, the purrfect size for making the perfect biscuits! He loves the sounds of nature, and will gladly sit i...n your lap purring, making biscuits, and listening to birdsong. Bob has FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia virus), which we can discuss more during a meet and greet. Keeping cats indoors is the best way to prevent the spread of FIV and FeLV, and keep cats safe from injury or illnesses, so no matter how badly Bob wants to trick-or-treat, the best option for him will be to buy some snacks to have at home. Don't forget, our Meowl-O-Ween adoption special ends at 6 PM on 10/26/20. Adult cats are $10 and kittens are $75.

While you’re out picking up candy, costumes, and movies, don’t forget to also swing by our website to check out a new purrfect friend for Meowl-O-Ween! Saber is an 11 year old sweetheart who recently became homeless, and she would love to be home for the spooky hang out holidays. She’s a little selective about the cats that she’s friends with at the shelter, and would probably prefer to be an only pet. We gave her an Ursula costume, but when it’s not meowl-o-ween she loves t...o be treated like the princess of the story. She loves to be spoiled rotten with attention. She’s a very vocal kitty, and will talk to you to tell you she wants to be petted and loved on. She just wants all forms of attention, petting, cuddling, brushing, and to spend time with her family. She’s also very nosy, she enjoys knowing what people are up to and will follow her new owners around the house to keep an eye on things. To learn more about Saber or any of our other purrfect pets, visit our website (https://www.ci.independence.mo.us/AnimalSe/AdoptableAnimals) and browse around! When you decide who you want to meet, you can fill out a pre-adoption survey on our website, then email it to us. Then, call (816) 325-7207 (ext.2) and ask to make an appointment for a digital meeting! We can’t wait to send you home with your new furry best friend!

Kathy and Coral: This Meowl-O-Ween season we want to take the chance to introduce you all to some sweet older ladies looking for their furrever homes; Kathy and Coral! Kathy is a 9 year old sweetheart who enjoys to play, cuddle, and take naps. She likes being held and petted, enjoys wand toys, and is very talkative! She drinks her water by dipping her paws in it, and is a wonderfully sweet kitty. ... Coral is a 12 year old cutie with a curious and independent nature, she likes to see what’s going on, but doesn’t mind being left alone. She likes to rub on people’s legs while she checks on us. Coral also absolutely loves catnip, when she finds some she rolls around on it and meows, and gets herself ready to play. Either one of them would be a wonderful addition to your home! Remember, our Meowl-O-Ween cat adoption special runs through 10/26/20. Adult cat adoption fees are $10 and kittens are $75. Don't miss the opportunity to add a little magic to your family!

While we’re doing our very magical Meowl-O-Ween Adoption Special, we wanted to introduce you to two very magical cats! Both of these special cats have Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which is a virus that weakens cats’ immune systems. Cats with FIV can be incredible companions, and can live full and happy lives, but have to have a special eye kept on them to watch out for injuries and illness. When a cat with FIV gets sick or hurt it can take longer to heal so they shou...ld have vet attention right away! FIV is spread through deep bite wounds, so to keep your cat safe and prevent the spread of FIV, cats with FIV should be kept indoors! Sunshine is a very sweet boy who has been in our care for over five months. He was injured when he arrived, and has had around 30 surgeries to get better! Sunshine is a tripod cat with only three legs, but he gets around well and can use his litterbox and furniture as usual. Sunshine is a very affectionate kiddo, and loves to snuggle. He loves attention, and being petted and brushed. He’s a love-bug! Also, he loves sleeping and rolling around on soft rugs. Annie is affectionate and sweet with people, and plays very gently. She is so happy when we come in to play with her and pet her, and she has a very nice purr. She’s lived with four different male cats in colonies at the shelter, and while she can be a little bossy she loves playing with her friends. She loves napping in the sun, and is very independent and curious. Sunshine and Annie are so sweet and friendly with each other, you might even consider getting two! After all, the best way to spend Halloween is with a cat in each arm watching movies together! If you are interested in adopting, fill out a pre-adoption survey and an Adoptions Counselor will call you to schedule a time to virtually meet Sunshine, Annie, or any of our other magical cats.

Meowl-O-Ween is coming! We’ve cast a spell and starting today all of our adult cat adoption fees are $10 and our kitten adoption fees are $75. Act quickly though, our spell ends on October 26th at the stroke of 6pm. Looking for something double the fun? Butter and Smokey are a pair of bonded brothers, which means they must be adopted together. Just like Excalibur and the Stone, only a truly magical person can get these boys out of the shelter. Today, one of our officers came across this guy running loose. Thankfully, he was a tagged, so we were able to locate the owners and bring him home. The owners were unaware that he had gotten loose but happy to have him back home. Our animal services officers work hard to return stray animals to their owners in the field. This keeps owned animals out of the shelter and makes it possible to provide education and service to our community. The job is made easier when owners microchip or keep collars with tags on their pets. We are thankful for their hard work and compassion for the animals and their owners.
