This is the fourth of a series of Sunday posts HKC is sharing of the Endangered sketches prepared by Urban Sketchers Kansas City - one building at a time. Enjoy the 7TH CHURCH OF CHRIST SCIENTIST! https://www.facebook.com/392323177803611/videos/337353090829167 Last year, @HistoricKC aggressively advocated against the demolition of the 7TH CHURCH OF CHRIST SCIENTIST, at 604 W 47th St., and infill development proposal by RED Development. The proposal was withdrawn following HK...C’s success in advocating for the adoption of the Plaza Bowl Overlay District. The Overlay should limit a new building, at this location, to no more than 45 feet. The church was purchased early in 2020 by JH Investors, associated with the developer of the Jack Henry Building. Acquisition of the church is a developer’s move closer to demolition of a cherished and respected Plaza landmark. A copy of the recorded deed along with the separately recorded memorandum suggests some type of lease back to the church. The deed was recorded Monday, February 10. That transfer occurred before the NPD City Council Committee hearing on February 12 that considered the height deviation request with respect to the Jack Henry Building. The developer’s intent is to demolish the church and replace it with a box that may or may not conform to the Overlay District. HKC and supporters of the Plaza are advocating for the City to adopt deviation criteria as stated above. The 7th Church of Christ Scientist, 604 W 47th St, is an excellent example of the Romanesque Revival style. Constructed in 1941, it was designed by Indianapolis architect Charles Wilbur Foster to blend with the Country Club Plaza. Any and all alternatives to demolition should be explored. Options for the most sympathetic reuse possible of the historic church could include reuse as a place of worship by another denomination, cultural or educational purposes as a social gathering place, or a creative development plan that incorporates the historic church into a mixed-use development. Other cities throughout the country have seen churches adaptively reused as offices for design firms, nightclubs and restaurants. Urban Sketchers Kansas City is dedicated to fostering a community of artists who practice on-location drawing. USKC selects a location from Historic Kansas City’s 2019 Most Endangered Places List twice a month, highlighting sketches from chapter members. Their drawings are a record of time and place. A Place in Time features the work of local historians, writers and photographers and highlights more than 350 key residential and commercial structures found throughout the city. The book includes overviews of six Kansas City areas: Northland, Downtown-Westside-Northeast, Crossroads-Midtown-Westport, Country Club-Brookside-Waldo, East Side-Swope, and Martin City-Hickman Mills-Little Blue Valley. The book also includes detailed street maps showing the locations of each profile...d structure, making it a handy, compact guide to keep in the glove box or carry on an architectural tour. To read its pages is to replay Kansas City’s rich, deep history, block by block, street by street. This guidebook is an extensive amalgam of the architecture and history of Kansas City, Missouri. Enjoy Hope Center! https://www.facebook.com/392323177803611/videos/352536025939539 New to the list this year, Annunciation Roman Catholic Church (THE HOPE CENTER INC), 2800 E Linwood Blvd. The 1924 Romanesque church was designed by Frederick Gunn. In 1940 the church interior was remodeled and i...n 1953 a new school building was built to the west. In 1975, the parishes of Annunciation, Holy Name and St. Vincent were consolidated and renamed Church of the Risen Christ. The church is now owned by The Hope Center. It is currently not in use except for the occasional event yet remains beautiful inside. The stations of the cross are gone and all of the stained glass windows, made in Innsbruck, Austria. were sold when the Catholic church left in the 90's. It needs a great deal of care. It is hoped that listing Hope Center on the Endangered List will bring new awareness to The Hope Centers challenge towards funding a full reuse and rehabilitation plan.
